Hi, just wondering if you could recommend some good hair & makeup artists for a formal/grad situation. Thank you in advance :)
Hey! From personal experience, Megan Vaughan is such a versatile make up artist - she’ll pretty much be able to reproduce any look you like. Amy Taylor is a similar story in the hair department. I guarantee you’ll look amazing with these two on your case! xx
What's your tip for dressing everyday at college? What type of bag do you recommend for it also? Like aa longchamp bag or maybe a packback?
Obviously dress in what is comfortable, but not so far that you turn up in your pyjamas. I generally go with the opposite top vs bottom rule - so if you’re wearing an oversized knit, go with skinny jeans rather than boyfriend jeans. If you’re wearing a fitted shirt, try wide-legged pants. Then mix and match your wardrobe to hell :) Backpacks are definitely the better option - after first year, my shoulders were lopsided from carrying heavy books on one shoulder! My favourite backpack is my Eulalee Howell one. I’ve also got a Foley + Corinna one that I’ve been using for books this semester, and I’ve got my eye on this adorable quilted one! Hope that’s helpful x
hi margaret! are you mandarin? and also how do you or did you find the balance between yr 12 and other aspects of life? if we haven't been doing too well during school for the year is it too late to redeem ourselves? lots of love!
Hello hello! Yes, my parents are from mainland China, and I speak Mandarin and their little country town dialect. In year 12, I found it easiest to procrastinate between my interests. So when I was bored of studying, I’d blog. When I got sick of blogging, I’d go running/swimming, etc. which worked quite well. Definitely not too late to do well! If you haven’t had trials yet, heads down. If you have, make sure you collaborate with all your friends and cohort, share notes, and support each other so that your year group does well as a whole! Good luck :) x
hi! I am a huge fan of your blog - you have such an amazing sense of style! I was just wondering where you got your moschino belt from that you have pictured in a lot of the Shop by three photos. I'm really wanting one - it's just the price that's holding me back! Do you know of anywhere I could semi-cheaply get one? Thankyou so much :) xoxo
I was so lucky to score on on eBay!! Definitely keep an eye out on eBay and Etsy :) x
Comfortable and fashionable shoes for walking around NY in?
Ok I know this is such a biased answer, but I’ve been walking in these daily for the past month, and I can tell you that they’re like walking on clouds. I have them in black, but they come in a bajillion other colours too, so take a look! And if you don’t like them, let me know and I’ll do another hunt for you :) x
Hi! Love your blog. I have a few questions: 1. I'm a little scared to make my blog public- and people to find out about it and make fun of it but at the same time it would be great to be recognised for my own work. What's your advice on this. Should I just tell my friends about it or whatever? I'm scared to put my face and name on my blog... 2. What's the link to the sportsgirl leather fringe dress? 3. How do you afford all those gorgeous clothes??
Hey! So glad you love the blog. If you’re uncomfortable with the people you know seeing your blog, I honestly don’t see a problem with keeping it on the down low. That’s the beauty of the internet - it’s a whole new audience of people who are actually looking for the things you’re writing about. If they find out about it, that’s their issue and whether they like it not isn’t what you should be thinking about! If fashion and blogging is something you’d really like to get into, then go for it and you’ll find your niche corner of readers (or they’ll find you, rather) over time. When I started, I didn’t find the need to publicise it, but if people asked me about it, I didn’t go to any effort to hide it either. Hope that’s helpful, and definitely shoot me an email at margaret(at)shinebythree(dot)com if you have any more Qs! I can’t find the Sportsgirl leather fringe dress online right now, but this and this are all kind of similar. As for my wardrobe, I have a pretty good knack of recycling clothes, altering, wearing upside-down, trading with friends, selling at Shop By Three then buying new things. I’m also lucky enough to shoot a lot of stunning samples by some of my favourite designers. Happy Monday! xx
I have a formal coming up and I want to get my make up and hair done by a professional. Could you recommend any places? Preferably in the cbd area :) Thanks!! And keep up with the great blog x
I’ve had my hair done a few times by Amy Taylor - she’s really amazing with specific styles, the smaller details, etc. Definitely get in touch with her and see! Otherwise, Oscar Oscar salon on Oxford St has really talented artists too :) Hope that’s helpful!
Hi Margaret. I think you are a sublime human being and that you are so accomplished in life. I love your blog. I was just wondering how uni breaks work? When do they usually occur? Also, do you think that the sportsgirl fringe leather dress would be suitable for a yr 12 formal? Thank you so much and keep doing your thang :)
Hi! So glad you’re liking Shine By Three. There are two semesters per Uni year, and the break between the two goes for about 4-5 weeks in June-July. There are also mid-semester breaks that run for a week, and STUVAC (also a week) before exams. The end of year break is from November till April, so plenty of traveling time! The Sportsgirl dress is cute - and as long as you accessorise well, you could definitely pull it off xx
